And if you can stomach a little extra spam, some of these may prove valuable additions to your stockpile of synths. What follows are some awesome sounding instruments in no particular order that are indeed free with very few strings attached. But it behooves even the most experienced consumer to proceed with caution when the word free is thrown around. I really don’t mind spending a few dollars for some shareware now and again to support a budding developer. Well, business is business, and I suppose everyone needs to make a buck. Aren’t all demos supposed to be free? In other cases, free software is dangled like a carrot in order to get your email address or to entice you into buying other products, preset libraries, add-ons, etc. Often you will follow a link only to find out that it’s a free “demo”. Some of these instruments were released as prototypes or were the early experiments of developers just entering the market.įree stuff is not always actually free. I'm not sure if it's like that with all VST/VST3 or just if you mix VST and AU but either way, for now I am staying AU in REAPER until a few other things get sorted out. It’s been a while since I surveyed the market for free software synths, so I thought I’d give it go and see what’s new and what has stood the test of time. If I mix and match AU and VST, there is more of a glitch in the the playback when I move GUIs. So for now, I am sticking with AU but would be nice to see the UAD load issue when the plugin isn't in use be resolved with AU instances of UAD. This UAD situation, along with some info I read about AU being less efficient and whatnot than VST made me attempt to use all VST plugins instead of AU but I actually ran into some VST3 issues with FabFilter and a few others in REAPER (also reported to Justin REAPER). I'll also add that UAD and WaveLab have been rock solid as well. I use 100% AU right now and the only concern really was this UAD DSP load issue. I've actually had fairly good luck with AU plugins in REAPER. When I started trying to use REAPER in place of Pro Tools, I leaned towards the AU versions of plugins because of how troublesome VST/VST3 plugins were in WaveLab. I'm a long time Pro Tools and WaveLab user. It's hard to say if it's more of a REAPER fix or UAD fix but it would be nice to get it sorted out. The only way I can get AU UAD DSP to unload in REAPER is by toggling the AU version of UAD offline. Justin REAPER has been pretty great at addressing things but they have been silent about this when it comes to my forum posts about it. I think it would be worth doing some basic testing with REAPER for UAD support.Ĭlick to expand. Thanks for the info. More and more people are ditching Pro Tools for REAPER every week and not the other way around really. I know it's not Pro Tools or Logic and I was a skeptic myself until I really dug into it, but REAPER is a truly amazing and powerful DAW. Perhaps somebody from UA will read this and can take a closer look at REAPER compatibly. I know that AU and VST are like apples and oranges, but WaveLab for example which uses VST plugins has a feature where their version of item FX (clip FX) only taxes the UAD DSP when the clip with UAD plugins inserted in playing or rendering. If I mix AU and VST/VST3 FX on an item, then a glitch occurs in playback when changing plugin GUIs which is annoying. Ideally I would move to all VST/VST3 plugins in REAPER but there are a few plugins I regularly use that have VST issues in REAPER so for now, I'm sticking with AU. The setting for "Release all UAD DSP on AU bypass" setting doesn't seem to have any affect when using REAPER. With VST, the UAD DSP is only taxed when that item/clip/audio file is being played or rendered as you would expect. Again, with AU versions of UAD, the DSP is taxed even if the item/clip/audio file is not playing. If I use the VST version, then bypassing the plugin releases the DSP.Īlso, REAPER allows for item FX meaning instead of inserting the plugin on a track or channel, you can insert FX directly on the audio clip or audio file which is especially useful in mastering situations. I just noticed that in REAPER, when using the AU version of UAD plugins, bypassing the plugin doesn't release the DSP on the UAD card.
